Cheikh Anto Diop was a great Senegalese historian, physicist, anthropologist, philosopher and a politician. He is among the greatest scientist beyond any doubt, and he should be categorised in the class of Darwin, as he demonstrated that Africa is the cradle for mankind.
Everything started in Africa, and that Egypt and modern day Africans descended from the same ancestors, they were the same people. You can imagine before Cheikh, Africans were considered nothing, history of Africans started in chains, and that Egyptians were not Africans but Arabs. From what people have been taught about ugly face of Africans, and that considering the current mismanagements of this continent by so called leaders, the great Egyptian civilization, which gave so much to the world, could not have come from the black people. Europeans refused to admit it though, even with some initial scientifically proven facts, that Egyptians could ever be black people, because they believed Africans were so backward and such that our ancestors could not have made the great pyramids of Giza or the great sphinx. After all, Cheikh Anta Diop proved them all wrong.
Cheikh Anta Diop, earned two PhDs, one in history and the other in nuclear physics. He was the only African student during his generation to have received a training in Egyptology. He was well versed in prehistoric and archaeology and linguistics. It took him almost a decade to have his doctorate degree granted. When he submitted his thesis in 1951, based on the premise that Egypt of the great pharaohs and pyramids was an African civilization, it was rejected.
He again published it in 1955, as Nations Négre et Culture, and received world-wide acclaim. Two additional attempts at submitting it, was rejected, until 1960 when he managed to convince a room full of physicists, Egyptologists, and historians.
Having endured decades of rejections, Diop was destined for greatness.
In 1974, Diop managed to prove beyond any doubt that Egyptians, were in fact black people. He obtained pigments from Egyptian mummies and tested it for melanin content. He accurately determined their melanin content, and later published his technique and methodology for the melanin dosage test in scholarly journals. This techniques is used today by Forensic investigators around the world, to determine the “racial identity” of badly burnt accidents victims.
He was affectionately known as the Pharaoh of knowledge, and the Université Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) of Dakar was re-named after his honour.
